The Certified Construction Associate (CCA) Program is an advanced, six-part, self study course in construction terminology, procedures and processes. NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) requires the program be completed in three (3) years. Participants study at their own pace but must pass all six parts within three (3) years with 2 possible one year extensions. Extensions must be approved by the NEF Executive Committee. After successfully passing certification exams in all six parts, participants receive Certified Construction Associate certificates, pins and are entitled to use the letters, CCA after their names.

BUSINESS ANALYSIS

OBJECTIVES -

ECONOMICS - ECONOMICS AND THE FIRM deals with the study of basic economic principles and how these principles can be applied to the firm, and the individual as well.

COST ACCOUNTING FOR CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS - The lessons of this section explain in simple language the theory of double entry bookkeeping. It also familiarizes one with the concepts employed in cost accounting.The general scheme of cost accounting must be viewed as a process of gathering the elements of a job in such a manner as to enable contractors to determine gain or loss for that job.

INSURANCE AND BONDING - After studying this section you should be able to:

  1. Understand the concept of risk management and use its terminology correctly.
  2. Apply risk management tools to risk situations encountered in business.
  3. Explain the principles underlying insurance as a means of transferring risk.
  4. Analyze and determine the proper type of insurance for risk situations typically present in the construction industry.

    CONSTRUCTION ENVIRONS

OBJECTIVES -

  • Define ethics
  • Distinguish ethics from morality and law
  • Discuss the relationship of ethics to business
  • Give examples of codes of ethics

The corporate effort to foster a positive image, the ethical considerations behind this effort, and the responsibilities embodied in contract law combine to create an environment in which the construction industry functions. This environment is the subject of Construction Environs.

This course is divided into two sections: Marketing and Contract Law. Marketing includes lessons on ethics and public relations as well as marketing itself. Contract Law gives an overview of the elements which constitute the written construction contract.

CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLES

OBJECTIVES -

  • Read a contract for professional services for an Owner-Architect, Owner-Engineer and Architect-Engineer.
  • Evaluate the ethical considerations in force for the construction industry

This course is a composite of the important principles required to plan and complete a successful construction project. Documents and forms included with the course are pathways to understanding the processes of construction principles and their relationship to the performance of work.

  • The Client, the Architect, the Engineer and the Contractor address the study of ethics, definitions, forms of contracts and general conditions (and special conditions) of contracts.
  • Construction Standards addresses the role building codes play in the total picture of construction.
  • The Bidding and Negotiating Process addresses the procedure used in the award of construction contracts.
  • Planning, Scheduling and Controlling a project acquaints the student with some of the techniques which may be used to control time and to indicate the importance of cost awareness.
  • Contract Administration provides the student with a broad overview of contractual relationships between contract parties for contract construction.
  • Safety in Construction allocates responsibility for safety on a construction project between the owner, architect, builders and workman.
  • Security identifies problem areas created by theft, vandalism and other crimes.
  • Quality Control identifies effects of supervision on quality control.

The purpose of Effective Communications is to assist you in learning to write better and speak with confidence. To write well, you must be aware of language, style, tone and format. To speak well, you must overcome anxiety and master your subject.

LABOR RELATIONS

OBJECTIVES -

  • Identify the principal reasons for the emergence of labor unions
  • Describe the historical attitude of management towards unions
  • Characterize current management-union relations

As the economy changed from agrarian to industrial, the individual's source of employment changed. The majority of workers lost direct control of their economic destinies. The shift from self-employed to employee brought about a need for a whole new type of communications called industrial relations. Labor Relations explains the industrial relations communications.

Management is commonly defined as "the conscious organization of people and resources to accomplish purposes". Although this definition expresses a concise distinction between people and resources, emphasizing that people are and should be valued differently than assets can be measured finitely, it can be expanded to "the conscious organization of people and other resources to accomplish purposes". This general definition reflects the importance of people and their skills as the major resources of most organizations. Human Resources Management, then, is the sum of the organizational processes through which people fulfill and influence the organizations' purposes.
