Building Design Program

The NAWIC Building Design Program presents a flexible plan that can be incorporated into any middle or high school technology curriculum to introduce design-build concepts to its participants.  It requres a design-build construction team to produce a structure incorporating specific design features on a site provided for a given dollar amount.  The crucial elements to be incorporated as part of the project are:

  • a floor plan
  • elevations
  • a quantity take-off
  • a project cost worksheet
  • a site layout
  • career and project reports
  • a constructed model

The degree of detail required and time given to each element will determine the length of the project.  The greatest benefit is obtained when the program is used as a two to four week study course within the technology curriculum allowing time for fostering creativity, teamwork, communication/presentation acumen, and English and Math skills while promoting industry awareness and career choices.  It may also be used as a half day to full day training session for potential or first time presenters and participating instructors as an introduction to the program.

This program encompasses skills development in math, science and communication arts by having teams of students design a residence, create a scaled-model, keep daily journals and write about the construction careers involved in creating the project.  The program options consist of building a model to scale of a 1,500 sq. ft. house or building a 120 to 180 sq ft. garden shed.
